Impressionism & Impressionist artists
Gaustave Caillebotte, 'Paris Street: Rainy Day' (1876-1877)

The modern art/contemporary art movement of Impressionism was in motion in 1867. The idea behind the contemporary/modern art movement of Impressionism was that the artist would convey, through their art work, an effect of communicating to the viewer in a manner that would make the viewer see an object in the way that someone would see that object if they were to glance at it.

Impressionism was a modern art/contemporary art movement which, through painting an image as if it was a glance, would show how an object's surroundings can effect what is seen in a memory.

The thinking behind the idea of impressionism was a catalyst and inspiration for many of the modern art/contemporary art movement that followed. Art had a new thinking, no longer does it have to resemble a photographic image, it can embrace an extra dimension which is, 'how we perceive art'.

The idea of how we perceive art was very much the thinking behind all the modern art/contemporary art movements to follow Impressionism.

Impressionism started to die out as new ideas in the art world started to flow. Impressionism developed into Pointillism which used small dots to give paintings greater vibrancy.

The pioneers of the modern art/contemporary art movement of Impressionism were: Claude Monet, Paul Cezanne, Edgar Degas, Frederic Bazille, Gustave Caillebotte and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.
