Richard Allen was studied art at the Bath Academy of Art (England) in 1957. He spent the foundation years of his modern art life studying and experimenting with mosaic, when he won an Italian Scholarship in art to study mosaic.
Allen started teaching art in 1962 at the Croydon College of Art (England). Colleagues at the school included the likes of Bridget riley, John Hoyland, Alan Jones, David Leveret and Barry Fantoni.
In 1964 he started working on Op art paintings with his fellow colleagues (listed above). He went travelling round India for a year and introduces 'moire' into his work, experimenting with the relationship between art and science he used lines and colour to create optical illusion effects.
