Sun K Kwak's latest exhibition, 'Times Composed'

Brooklyn, New York, Ch'i Contemporary Fine Art presents Times Composed, Sun K. Kwak's signature medium of expression masking tape drawings, are meditative studies of the surrounding environment, a dialog between the spiritual and natural forces that we struggle to reconcile culture-wide. On the surface, the installations are beautiful melodic drawings containing rhythms and momentum resembling improvisational works of art. Yet, recalling the psychic convolutions of surrealist automatism, each work is a reaction to the environment's qi (life force). Tapping into the architecture's history and former dwellers, Ms. Kwak provides a visual clue into the hidden yet apparent energy within each space.

Born in Seoul, Korea, Sun K. Kwak lives and works in New York City. Her wall drawings are permanently installed in public and private spaces in the US and abroad. In 2007, the curatorial team of the Leeum Museum in Korea commissioned Ms. Kwak for a major public art project installed in the new Samsung Life Building's lobby in Seoul. While her smaller masking tape on panel and ink on paper works can be found in private collections around the United States. Sun has also exhibited at the Total Museum in Seoul, the House of World Culture Berlin, Salvatore Ferragamo Gallery, ARCO Sala Alcala`31 in Madrid, the Hyundai Window Gallery, The 6th Gwangju Biennale, The Drawing Center, The Queens Museum of Art, The Queens Museum at Bulova Center, and The Seoul City Museum. Sun received her MFA from New York University and BFA from Sook Myung University in Seoul, Korea. In 2006, she was a recipient of the Pollack-Krasner Grant. She has participated in artist residencies at PS.122 Project Studio, an Artist Alliance, and the Henry Street Settlement. Most recently, Ms. Kwak exhibited an installation at a group show at Mixed Greens Gallery in Chelsea entitled Synthetic Supernova.

Ch'i Contemporary Fine Art, established in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in 1999 and directed by Tracy Causey-Jeffery is committed to exhibiting vibrant contemporary art by living artists: both mid-career and emerging. Ch'i exhibits works in two distinct styles: abstract, textural or fragmented figurative. Ch'i hosts 11-15 exhibitions annually with their artists coming from across America, Asia, Europe and South America. In addition to its own exhibitions, Ch'i participates annually in at least 3 international fairs. In 2007, the gallery participated in Fountain NY and the Bridge Art Fairs in Chicago, London, and Miami. In 2008, Chi participated in the first Bridge New York art fair in March. Additionally, Ch'i and its artists have been published in Art World News, NY Arts Magazine, Art Forum, Art News, Block Magazine, New York Times, The Village Voice, New York Sun, LA Times, Korea Times and Art and Antiques among others. Gallery artists are included in the permanent collections of Cantor Fitzgerald, The Musee Elysée, The Museum of the City of New York, MOMA, the Whitney Museum, Exxon Energy, Hong Kong Museum of Art, the Bank of China, the Kohler Company, The New York Public Library, The University of Maryland, Healthlink, the Kimbell Museum, the National Gallery of Australia, The Houston Museum and the Klutznick National Jewish Museum among others. Ch'i director, Tracy Causey-Jeffery received her masters in art history from the University of London after interning at Sotheby's auction house in New York City. Prior to opening Ch'i, she owned and operated The Finer Side Galleries in Maryland and Washington, D.C. for 7 years.
