Melissa Scott-Miller was announced by Ken Howard RA as the winner of this year's Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize. The winning painting (pictured) is a detailed view of the urban landscape from an Islington park. The painting depicts Victorian school buildings focusing on the sunlight, which washes across the bricks and slate of the building. Melissa's son and friend's are playing in the foreground. Melissa received £15,000 and an engraved gold medal. The Young Artist award of £2,500 was awarded to Stefan Orlowski for his painting Portrait of my Father. Communion by Peter Clossick, Bruno and Mrs Woods by Jennifer McRae, The Culvert by Wldayslaw Mirecki, Brothers in arms with Nephew by Mick Rooney RA and Waiting by Simon Turvey have each been awarded £1,000 runner up awards. The Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize, established in 2005 to promote painting from direct observation, is co-sponsored by Linklaters, and supported by media co-sponsor The Spectator. Visual art critic of The Spectator, Laura Gascoigne, joined the panel of five judges selecting an exhibition of works from almost 800 nationwide submissions. She commented “The Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize is four this year, and the present selection of 64 works is the most varied yet - a sign of rude good health in a branch of art supposed to have been killed off long ago by photography”. The judges comprising artist Anthony Green RA, artist Daphne Todd OBE, Benjamin Sullivan Artist and winner of Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize 2007 and Andrew Wilton visiting research fellow at Tate Britain were delighted with the high standard of works in the exhibition which includes works by Paul Brason PPRP, RWA, Susan Wilson and Tai Shan Schierenberg. The exhibition continues at Painters' Hall, 9 Little Trinity Lane, London EC4V 2AD, 10am-4pm, Monday-Sunday from 19 November to 29 November 2008. Winners 1st Prize Winner £15,000
Melissa Scott-Miller studied at The Slade School of Fine Art. In 1999 Melissa was elected as a member of The Royal Society Of Portrait Painters. Young Artist Award £2,500
Stefan Orlowski graduated from Aberystwyth in 2007; he has exhibited widely in Manchester. Runners up £1,000 Peter Clossick vice president of the London Group, he has work in many notable public collections including Oxford University.
Jennifer McRae won first prize in RWS/Sunday Times Watercolour Competition 2008. She has works in the National, and Scottish National Portrait Galleries.
Wladyslaw Mirecki has exhibited widely and has work in international public collections such as Jiangsu Province Art Museum, China.
Mick Rooney RA has received numerous awards including the Korn-Ferry International Premier Award.
Simon Turvey Elected a member of SWLA in 1981, he has exhibited widely including the RA Summer Show and the BP Portrait Award.
