Soliloquy by Josh George and Katheryn Holt at Tria Gallery |
|
27th August 2009
On September 10, 2009 - New York, NY. Tria Gallery will present the first exhibition in its new space at 531 West 25th Street, ground floor suite 5. Soliloquy: New Works by Katheryn Holt and Josh George will be on view from September 10 through October 17, 2009.
Continue story below:
1.soliloquy - a dramatic speech intended to give the illusion of unspoken reflections. In a monologue, the speaker may be addressing other people. In a soliloquy, the speaker is always talking to himself or herself. The subjects captured by Katheryn Holt and Josh George differ in certain respects. Holt paints women caught up in various social rituals. Her women are active, glamorous and often times seem to have been captured from a film made in Hollywood's golden era. George paints men and women out in restaurants or bars, also in active social settings. His characters feel current and present in the moment, yet somehow there is a timelessness to them, too. Their clothing and surroundings place them somewhere else, thought we do not know quite where. Despite the activity and social settings of Holt's and George's paintings, their figures express a sense of loneliness and isolation. They are looking away, or off into the distance, disengaged from the commotion of their immediate surroundings. It is as if each is having a private moment of reflection, a deeper, more profound conversation with himself or herself than the social setting would suggest. Holt and George are united in their uncanny ability to capture these private moments, these soliloquies not intended for others. Katheryn Holt On the "Soliloquy" theme, Ms. Holt commented: I recently read that in spite of the increased opportunity for communication in our culture today, people seem to be experiencing a greater sense of isolation from one another. Having looked to the Italian Renaissance artists Tintoretto and Titian for inspiration I have staged the women in my paintings to convey this notion of isolation. The figures - whether in groups or alone - are placed equally downstage, their activity mannered and private. They occupy a place between the personal realm of memory and the more public realm of documentation of iconic female characters found in the media. Positioned center stage, my all-female cast reveals itself to the viewer in its pop memoryscape filled with mixed-media images and text derived from 1950s magazine ads as well as TV scripts written by my father in the 1960s and 1970s. Patterns of polka dots, gingham, lace and sweeps of graphic linoleum color cast a light on these players, illuminating their form, framing and separating them. While they appear to be engaged in conversation and activity, a closer glance reveals their shared incapacity to make a connection. Like an actress delivering her soliloquy in a play, each woman fails to reveal herself to her companions but instead does so to you, her audience. Holt received her BFA from the Art Center College of Design in California and has been an instructor at the School of Visual Arts in New York, as well as a guest speaker in numerous other schools and institutions. She has had nine solo exhibitions in California, and her work has been shown in dozens of group exhibitions throughout the country, and her work has been collected by countless private and corporate collectors. Tria is delighted to showcase her work in this two person exhibition. Josh George The characters painted by Josh George are haunting. They are never painted alone, yet they are somehow emotionally isolated, and we feel this isolation strongly. George's subjects are not always people; sometimes they are old New York City buildings, which have such visual depth of character, texture and personality that one feels they are almost human. One hears their voice, admires their character, and somehow senses their isolation, too. George comments on his work in "Soliloquy": The city has a wealth of information to process: screeching subway cars, unexpected silences, sunlight hitting a hotdog cart or a brick wall or a beveled window; throngs of people in the crosswalks... The stimuli is at once overwhelming and inspiring. As a painter, I enjoy the challenge of observing these chaotic elements and deciding which details need to be amplified - or muted - in order to create an experience of our urbanity. Working in the studio, I look at each painting the same way I look at the city: initially, the surface is chaotic, a wonderful mess of colors and textures (specifically, layers of collage and paint) that I need to consider and assess, then shape into something the viewer and I, each in our own ways, can enter and investigate. The people in my paintings are trying to make sense of the chaos around them, too. Ultimately the characters in my paintings - whether they are people or buildings - speak to the viewer in their own way, and hopefully their voices are heard amidst the tumult of city life. George has had over a dozen one man exhibitions over the past ten years, and has participated in numerous group exhibitions throughout the U.S. and Italy. He was on the painting faculty of Pratt Institute in New York until this August when he moved to Virginia. His paintings hang in private collections throughout the U.S. and Italy. Tria is honored to showcase his work in this two person exhibition. Tria Gallery specializes in contemporary painting and mixed media by established and emerging artists. In addition to artwork on exhibit, the gallery maintains an inventory of select works by its featured artists. Tria's three directors, Carol Suchman, Paige Bart and Latifa Metheny, are committed to presenting artists with compelling bodies of work, and ones whose stories should, in their opinion, be told. This is Tria's first exhibition in its new space at 531 West 25th Street, ground floor, suite 5. Tria is open to the public from Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00-6:00 or by appointment. Soliloquy: New Works by Katheryn Holt and Josh George will be on view from September 10 through October 17, 2009. For more information please visit www.triagallerynyc.com.
