Darren Coffield | Dawn Cole | Alexander Heaton | David Pike | Ethan Pollock

25th August 2010

Continue story below:

Going West is the first of a series of exhibitions to be held in the Putney Exchange, Putney. Going West gives five emerging and established artists based in East London the platform to exhibit their work to a new public in West London.

Darren Coffield - “For many years I have been preoccupied with the war that rages on across the world, the war of images. In response I decided to search for an imperial image that would dominate all others, but this only led to a false notion of individuality and freedom. Painters, like Insurgents, are solitary and obscure agents, occupying unwanted spaces, preparing symbolic provocations to be unleashed on the public. I find myself surrounded by inescapable ideologies, a necessary part of the human condition or a superfluous and life threatening madness: The Society of the Spectacle.”

Dawn Cole - Throughout her creative practice Cole’s sources of inspiration are diverse yet there are recurrent themes throughout, themes of contradiction and contrast, repetition and reversal. Cole’s ideas are fuelled by a keen interest in research, a mechanism through which her work evolves. Much of her work manifests itself in the form of print. The many varying techniques and approaches to printmaking provide the opportunity to explore the interdependence of ideas and process, questioning and blurring boundaries to create a synthesis between the two.

Alexander Heaton - grew up in the hills of North Yorkshire and has been visiting the Alps since a young age. During these trips he fell in love not only with the light, the forms of the mountains and with walking in them, but also with the stories, myths, histories and traditions associated with the places he stayed in. For Heaton, mountains offer at once an escape and escapism. Without denying the possibility of the presence of a darker side lurking just beneath or beyond the surface, Heaton’s paintings offer temporary relief from our fractured existence.

David Pike - David’s practice sits on the boundary between fine art and architecture. His work is strongly formulaic and process driven. It draws on the experience of a personal and professional life in engineering, urban planning and art and design. It moves backwards and forwards across the media of drawing, print-making, photography and model making at various scales.

Ethan Pollock - aim is to create quiet, meditative paintings that deal with themes of loss and desire. he tries to develop playful dialogues with the history of painting, commandeer archaic themes and languages and breathe life into them through piracy and pillage. Working on a small scale allows the paintings to develop a more intimate dialogue with the viewer, and behave as a keyhole to a more private and ambiguous place.

18 August – 30 August

Exhibition Hours: Tuesday – Sunday, 11 – 6 pm
Unit 34, Putney Exchange, Putney High Street, SW15 1TW
