When Artist, Sophie Calle was dumped by her boy friend through an email she asked 100 women to read it. She became the star of the Biennale in Venice.
Sophie Calle aged 51 and a world respected conceptual artist was dumped in a playground style manner. She was visiting Berlin when her mobile buzzed. She read the email and realised to her amazement that her boyfriend had split up with her and even more to her amazement, via email!
Sophie did what any self-respecting world renowned artist would do and that’s to create an exhibition at the Biennale revolving round the email.
She gave the email to 100 women and took photographs of them whilst reading the email. The exhibition consists of their expressions whilst reading it. Other items in the exhibition consist of scrambled syntax from the email and a crossword manufactured out of the email.
Sophie Calle's work is a great example of conceptual art, whereby the artist has responded to excessive emotions and translated them into art form.
