Yorkshire Sculpture Park is delighted to announce that the stunning Andy Goldsworthy exhibition has been nominated in the Visual Arts category for The South Bank Show Awards.
The South Bank Show Awards are the only awards in the world to honour the best of British talent across the entire spectrum of the arts. Goldsworthy's extraordinary exhibition features commissioned permanent outdoor works and highly moving interventions in the Underground and Longside galleries, which have captured the imaginations of over two hundred and ten thousand local, national and international visitors since the exhibition opened in March.
Executive Director Peter Murray comments:
“We are absolutely delighted to be shortlisted for The South Bank Show Awards. The Goldsworthy exhibition is the largest and most ambitious project ever curated at YSP and the nomination is a fitting tribute, not only to Andy Goldsworthy's amazing achievements, but also to thirty years of vision, passion and dedication from YSP supporters, as well as Trustees and staff”
Melvyn Bragg, creator and presenter of The South Bank Show Awards says of this year's nominees; 'An extraordinary roll call in achievements across the spectrum in the arts for the 2008 South Bank Show Awards. Whatever else is happening, the arts in this country are still at full throttle. '
The other two nominations in the visual arts category are Mark Wallinger for 'State Britain' and David Adjaye for 'Rivington Place'. The winner will be announced on Tuesday 29 January 2008 when Melvyn Bragg will be hosting the twelfth annual South Bank Show Awards. The Awards will be televised on ITV on Sunday 3 February.
Recently Yorkshire Sculpture Park has been presented with additional awards: James Turrell's innovative Deer Shelter at YSP was honoured with the Marsh Award for Public Sculpture, and people in its region have voted Yorkshire Sculpture Park as their 'Pride of Place' in a recent poll by Wakefield Council. These awards contribute to YSP's growing local and international reputation for showing and commissioning influential contemporary art.
The Andy Goldsworthy exhibition continues at YSP until 6 January 2008.
