Interview with the artist Gemma Climpson

Gemma Climpson is a young British based artist whom is starting to receive interest regarding her artwork. We conducted an interview with Gemma to find out what makes her tick as an artist and to get to know the artist behind the artwork:

1. Background of yourself/Biography of yourself up until present day

I was born in 1983 in Essex and still live in the county. I studied Fine Art/Art & Design at both school and college and although I very much wanted to take it to degree level, I decided to choose a different path and instead maintained art as a hobby. In 2006 I decided to follow what I love and now market and sell my paintings on a part-time basis. I hope to fulfil my ambition of becoming a full-time artist very soon.

2. Explain your style of art

I like to call my style of art 'Escapism'! I paint scenes that are tranquil and relaxing and allow the viewer to escape from their daily lives. I believe strongly in imagery, which is a technique used in stress management to recreate an enjoyable or relaxing scene. I like to think my paintings have a resonance with this idea of imagery and that perhaps a stressful situation could be helped by gazing into a relaxing scene!

3. Who are your influences?

I studied Georgia O'Keefe and am a big fan of her work. I love the way she simplified nature with her paintings and really brought the detail of her flowers to life. I am also a fan of Jack Vettriano's work. I really admire the way they have both managed to inject light and dark into their paintings, albeit with very different subjects...
