Jill Tegan Doherty is an artist who has grasped, with both hands, the idea of Altermodernism (modernism for the 21st century). With her use of Surrealism and insight into the subconscious Jill's paintings are somewhat special. Lets get to know Jill Tegan Doherty a bit better:
1. Background of yourself/Biography of yourself up until present day
I was born in Bristol in 1983 and moved to Nottingham at the age of 1 where I grew up near the city centre. In a house full to the brim with insects (pinned in cases on the wall that is, not roaming in the walls), stuffed animals and skeletons, stemming from my fathers fascination with bones as a professor of Rheumatology. Then following in my Uncle's footsteps I was drawn to Kingston-upon-Thames to do my Foundation course and then went on to complete my Degree in Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art and Design in London. I currently live and work as an artist in Hackney and I am part of the ACAVA studio collective.
2. Explain your style of art
I guess you could say my art is greatly influenced by my father's somewhat interesting collection of various species and anatomies. I also take a lot of inspiration from my dreams and subconscious experiences. These elements lead my work into a noticeably surreal style of art, exploring various fields of the subconscious state and reenacting feelings of solitude and entrapment in one's own body.
