The labyrinth as a metaphor for the works to be shown at Strychnin Gallery is to be understood as a journey into the dreamworld that our subconscious takes us to every night when we sleep the entrance to the labyrinth as threshold to REM-sleep, hallucination and vision, never reaching the center or exit of the maze that we only visit in our dreams.
Belgian artist Raf Veulemans is also fascinated by the idea of the labyrinth; however, his fascination is focused on the myth of the Minotaur and the labyrinthine structures of ancient Egyptian pyramids: the labyrinth seen as a journey determining over life and death, or separating the dead from the living with uncertain outcome.
Veulemans' sometimes disturbing works often contain biblical references and always feature animal skeletons, skulls, fur, or claws. Apart from his graphic education as an artist, he has also learnt the skills of a taxidermist and prepares all animals used in his works himself.
The opening night also features music by sounddesigner Joerg Huettner, who is a member of world-famous film score writer Hans Zimmer's team in Los Angeles. Zimmer's Oscar-winning musical scores to blockbusters such as 'The Lion King,' 'Gladiator,' 'Pirates of the Caribbean' or 'Cat Woman' have long become the soundtracks to our dreams.
