My most successful pieces are figurative representations that embrace more abstract qualities on close inspection, with paint applied in small brushstrokes over several layers to create optical mixes of colour. Most of my current work is in oils on canvas. When working to tight deadlines I paint in acrylics.
My painting technique has developed over the years, from initial studies of the work of the Impressionists and the colour theories of the Post Impressionists, to subsequent influences such as Sargent and Brangwyn. I enjoy painting colours, textures, shapes, shadows and light and it is those elements that I seek in subject matter. Like the Impressionists, my chief concerns are with the effects of light. Unlike the Impressionists, I prefer to work from (my own) photographs.
I studied Illustration at Falmouth School of Art (now University College Falmouth). My Illustration work has featured on book covers, greeting cards, advertisements and more for clients including NatWest Bank, BBC Worldwide, Random House and Hallmark. The majority of my work since around 2002 has been fine art work - landscapes and portraits. I have held 2 solo exhibitions in Liverpool and taken part in several group shows. |
